7.2-channel AV receivers, combining power and variety of possibilities. If we compare Onkyo TX-NR686 vs Pioneer VSX-933 power – It is definitely Onkyo TX-NR686. Given the output power of the receiver, which is 165 watts per channel, even with quite demanding acoustics, it should not have any problems. The Pioneer VSX-933 is only 80 watts per channel. The TX-NR686 outperforms most of its competitors and, given the built-in 384 kHz / 32-bit DAC, it saves a bit when organizing a stereo system in another room. Pioneer is not far behind, also has a 384 kHz / 32-bit DAC. You will get an impressive immersion in sound. In addition to both devices, you get support for DTS Neural: X and Dolby Surround technologies.

Connections & Setup

Onkyo TX-NR686 has seven HDMI inputs and two 2.0 standard outputs, with 4K video support and all modern standards, including HDR 10. And the Pioneer VSX-933 has six HDMI inputs and one output, all HDMI supports 4K / 60p 4: 4: 4 video at 24 bits and HDCP 2.2 copy protection standard. The Pioneer VSX-933 receiver supports popular Hi-Res audio formats transmitted over a local network or USB. Onkyo TX-NR686 has full networking functionality, including support for the popular DTS Play-Fi wireless multi-room technology. AV receivers have built-in Bluetooth.

Design

The design of the Onkyo TX-NR686 remained fairly traditional and recognizable, the Pioneer vsx-933 as well. Both products have the same sleek, well-defined design with an elegant aluminum front panel. The aluminum front panel effectively shields sensitive circuits from external noise and electromagnetic radiation generated by dimmer switches, fluorescent lamps, video monitors, and similar devices. Pioneer VSX-933 pros & cons

Pros:

Cons:

  • The device is very hot, you need to buy an additional cooling system.

Onkyo TX-NR686 pros & cons

Pros:

  • For the sound of the additional living area, you can use both linear and acoustic stereo outputs.
  • Additional channels for the second stereo zone.
  • It is the representative of the most popular 600 series, which traditional models have a very favorable ratio of quality and price.

Cons:

  • During playback, there is not enough drive and dynamics.
