Connections & Setup

The setting on-screen guide was equal at both devices. When I decided to compare Onkyo TX-NR686 vs TX-RZ730, I found out that both of them have 3 aux inputs on the front panel. There was one unpleasant feature: in TX-NR686, the HDMI input was a little bit shattered. Perhaps, this was a problem of an assembly, but in practice, it was uncomfortable to use it and worry about frequent cord falling outside.

Design

The aesthetic compare of Onkyo TX-RZ730 vs TX-NR686 was easy because both have a presentable appearance, but the display of the first unit seemed to be more bright and precise. Showed information was visible even from the other side of the room and the second device demonstrated less color saturation. The figures on TX-NR686 were a little bit smaller than on TX-RZ730.

Onkyo TX-RZ730 pros & cons

Pros:

  • A great number of different THX sound modes allows getting a true enjoyment.
  • All the inputs and outputs work well.
  • It can play DSD files with the help of USB and HDMI.
  • It’s easy to set height channels.

Cons:

  • Front display shows the assigned input and not the sound mod.
  • The front panel buttons look solid, but it seemed to me that they are plastic and appear unreliable.

Onkyo TX-NR686 pros & cons

Pros:

  • The sound is crisp and punchy. It is awesome for both, listening to the music and watching epic films.
  • The device stays cool even after a long working day.
  • The calibration was performed at the first attempt.

Cons:

  • When I wanted to watch a DVD, I had to switch off the HDMI Blu-ray input and turn on the DVD component input.
  • A built-in Chromecast is only for audio. That is not a disaster, but my attempts to cast the video failed.
  • I had to do the firmware updating twice to get the steady work.
