Marantz NR1609 vs Onkyo TX-NR686

The Onkyo TX-NR686 is noted for its large power per channel that provides perfect volume from even quite demanding speakers. The unit has a DAC onboard with a rather high frequency that allows omitting the external converter. The AVR produces sound with well-balanced frequencies where high are not too bright or harsh and lows are deep enough.

The Marantz NR1609 has an A-B speaker switch to use one pair of speakers in a room for two different sources (a TV and a multi-room system, for example). It works with Amazon Alexa to make voice control possible. It supports AirPlay 2 to handle Apple ecosystem for playing Apple Music, streaming Netflix and YouTube.

Connections & Setup

The Marantz NR1609 comes with just one HDMI output that makes it impossible to connect both a TV and a projector at the same time. However, its eight HDMI inputs are all compatible with full-bandwidth 4K sources. Moreover, it displays the HDR type of each of them.

The Onkyo TX-NR686 has seven HDMI outputs to run an entire entertainment center. It uses AccuEQ mic that allows calibrating the receiver from the setup procedure and speaker calibration up to network connection.
