Audio-Technica AT-LP120 vs Pioneer PLX 1000: which one is better?

Looking for a professional turntable people often came across the two flagmen in this sphere which makes customers compare which one is actually better: Pioneer PLX 1000 vs Audio-Technica AT-LP120. I tested the stylus tracking with the Shure "audio obstacle course -era III" LP. This LP puts the tonearm and cartridge through very stringent tests, and this passed every tracking test flawlessly. Upgrading to a better cartridge is not necessary having passed these tests, unlike the situation we have with PLX 1000. As for me, this is a massive plus towards Audio-Technica. But still, take a look at other characteristics I underlined in Audio-Technica AT-LP120 vs Pioneer PLX 1000 comparison.
Both turntables have Preamp "PHONO": 2.5 mV nominal at 1 kHz. What about cartridge type, Audio-Technica AT-LP120 has dual magnet versus its opponent which owns moving magnet (MM). Playback speeds are also of the same figures. Both ones have 33.3, 45 RPM. So here your own preferences have to tell you which one is better for you according to the type of cartridge you'd like the most.
Design & build quality
The weight of both units is impressive. LP120 rests very solid with no vibration and resists movement. The controls are beveled aluminum and LED lit buttons. Very impressive to look at as well to use. The performance of the tonearm is excellent, and the design and construction are equally beautiful. The thickness of the dust cover was also impressive. Overall the craftsmanship of this turntable is better than I expected in the Pioneer model. The only plus here is the fact that all buttons and tonearm controls are accessible easily.
Audio-Technica AT-LP120 pros & cons
- I love the option to either use the built-in pre-amp or bypass it as I do since my receiver has dedicated phono inputs.
- Balancing the tonearm was pretty simple.
- Cartridge alignment: Beware, these cartridges are not mounted correctly requiring the need for an alignment protractor. The center location pre-mounted is not the correct alignment. Moving it to the back is the location that aligns best with the protractor indicating perfect tracking.
- Connectivity: The RCA audio cables are internally connected. I have a concern with this if it should ever need to be replaced. Output jacks are the only option I find acceptable.
Pioneer PLX 1000 pros & cons
- This turntable is designed for DJs who enjoy the look, feel, and performance of vinyl for music playback.
- Great care is taken to trim each Decksaver to achieve the best fit and still leave cables in place.
- Jacks for the power cord and USB cable are the only two offered.
