Having had an opportunity to test Onkyo TX-NR646 vs TX-NR686, I’d like to share my impression here to facilitate your choice of a new receiver. The Onkyo TX-NR646 costs around $310 versus TX-NR686 for $330. Comparing these two is like comparing a younger and an older brother. One is more affordable and power saving and the newer one is more advanced.

Both Onkyo AV receivers play Apple Lossless, AAC, WAV, WMA, MP3, DSD, FLAC, everything besides AIFF. Both receivers have some pretty cool built-in decoders. For example, TX-NR646 brags of Dolby Atmos, Dolby True HD, Dolby Digital Plus and the good old Dolby Surround. Compare it to the TX-NR686, which has DTS:X, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Atmos, Dolby digital plus, and Dolby True HD. As you can tell the manufacturer did everything to make sure that Onkyo TX-NR686 vs TX-NR646 is very different for the similar price point.

The operational power consumption for TX-NR686 is a whopping 570 W, which is a lot especially if you compare it to 360 W for TX-NR646. Onkyo receivers have a dual zone capability and a smartphone app to control them both remotely.

Connections & Setup

These AV receivers both have a Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and IEEE 802.3 and 802.3u. Plus both can process media from USB, Bluetooth, and Network.

The numbers of connectors are also very alike – no matter which Onkyo you choose you will have 2 Optical digital inputs, 1 Coaxial digital input, 2 HDMI inputs, 2 Subwoofer inputs, 1 input for phones and 1 input for USB. TX-NR646 has only 2 AV inputs, but with TX-NR686 you will have 5 more of those.

Design

The typical Onkyo design is a modern minimalistic one with a chrome matte black finish. The front panels are symmetric with black displays and acid green lettering. Both of them look extremely cool, especially if you like modern designs.

Onkyo TX-NR646 pros & cons

Pros:

  • Consumes way less power than the counterpart, an energy saving option.
  • The connectivity is great, use Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and others without budging.
  • Easy to hook up with your home theatre.

Cons:

  • Customer service might be hard to reach and to understand.
  • It has issues with a 4K signal pass.

Onkyo TX-NR686 pros & cons

Pros:

  • Very good efficient menu. Intuitive and clean.
  • Easy setup and alignment, a kid can handle.
  • Amazing sound quality like all Onkyo products.

Cons:

  • There is an overheating issue.
  • The repair shop might be hard to reach as they are lacking.
