Compare Yamaha RX-V685BL vs Onkyo TX-NR686 and choose only one

The Onkyo TX-NR686 vs Yamaha RX-V685BL comparison allowed me to find positive and negative functional moments in such popular receivers. Both of them don’t have a Dolby surround and I regarded this feature as an unpleasant one. Moreover, a total output power also differs: Onkyo has 800W, while Yamaha – 650W. All the peculiarities showed me the manufacturer’s accents. Thanks to this the testing was really very interesting.

Features & Performance

I was glad to find out that Yamaha RX-V685BL supports all the popular audio formats, while Onkyo can’t perform an AIFF. It’s not a crucial moment, but it was important to me. The RX-V685BL’s remote control is heavy and it was difficult to hold it in one hand. The same additional device in TX-NR686 is smaller and lighter.

Connections & Setup

The first thing I noticed was a different number of HDMI inputs. Onkyo has 7, while Yamaha – 5, but all of them work great. Due to the special on-screen instructions, the setting process also was easy. Only once the Onkyo stopped working and I had to reset it. The whole setting progress disappeared so it needed to start from the beginning.

Design

When I started to compare Yamaha RX-V685BL vs Onkyo TX-NR686, I have noticed that from a visual perspective the first device has a better appearance. The whole upper line on the front side is glossy and the down part is matted. Such a design solution looks modern and more creative. The Onkyo receiver has an old-fashioned view (with a special hole for a display) and this didn’t decorate the whole construction.

Onkyo TX-NR686 pros & cons

Pros:

  • Zone 2 worked amazingly. The device has enough power to fill the house with sound.
  • It perfectly worked with my projector.
  • It supports all the popular music streaming services (Spotify, Tidal, Deezer, Pandora, etc.)

Cons:

  • To watch a DVD I had to switch off the HDMI Blu-Ray input and turn on the DVD component input.
  • A Chromecast built-in is only for audio.

Yamaha RX-V685BL pros & cons

Pros:

  • Amazon Alexa perfectly performs all the tasks.
  • The sound quality is absorbing. Thanks to it the whole multimedia system became a real home cinema.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth didn’t let me down during the whole testing process.

Cons:

  • The device has a big size. It was uneasy to find the appropriate shelf for its placing.
  • The input for the headphones didn’t work. Even the firmware updating didn’t solve the problem.
