Choose the best one for you - Denon AVRX1400H vs Sony STRDN1080

Denon AVRX1400H vs Sony STRDN1080

You have decided to buy an av receiver and you have no clue which one you should actually choose? So, let’s simply compare Sony STRDN1080 vs Denon AVRX1400H and decide which model suits you best together!

Features & Performance

Denon AVRX1400H vs Sony STRDN1080 back

The biggest difference between two av receivers above is built-in decoders that each has. If you are a cinema lover and want to enjoy both DTS and Dolby sound movies, your only and best choice is Denon AVRX1400H which has all possible decoders built-in compare to DTS:X and Dolby Atmos that Sony has. On the other hand, if you want a really powerful sound with less energy consumption, Sony STRDN1080 is the best one for that: it gives out 165 W per channel using only 240 W while operating.

Connections & Setup

Both receivers have similar connectivity interfaces and have wifi, Bluetooth and IEEE feature embedded. However, if you have a lot of different things to be connected, choose Sony over Denon: it has an av input (Denon has none) and 2 HDMI outputs (compared to one that Denon has), however, Denon has 2 optical digital inputs versus Sony’s one. The rest of characteristics are the same: both have a single coaxial digital input, 6 HDMI in, no digital outputs, two subwoofer outputs, and USB and phone slots. Microphone for sound set up comes with both of these models therefore installation should be straightforward for you.

Design

Classical Denon’s design at its best – clearly labeled buttons on the remote, big screen and two wheels on the model – left one for input select and the right one for volume. Buttons above the front panel are clearly labeled and self-explanatory as well. Sony STRDN1080 has a smaller screen that can cause difficulties to see the time if you don’t’ have perfect eye vision, and two wheels for input and volume are on the right, my advice – read which one is which beforehand.

Pros & Cons

Sony STR-DN1080

VS

Pros

    • Offers 4K HDR compatibility with HDCP 2.2 support
    • Works with Google Home
    • Dolby Atmos - sound from above the visual field using additional speakers.
    • DTS:X added - being compatible with the newest formats is always a good thing. Sony's first receiver to fully implement this feature.

Cons

    • Removed one HDMI output compared to previous models.
    • Doesn’t support Apple lossless.

Denon AVR-X1400H

VS

Pros

    • Supports HDR and Dolby Atmos.
    • Great Upscaling via HDMI
    • I have found that voice commands via Alexa work perfectly.
    • I downloaded a digital version of the remote controller to control it via smartphone.
    • This receiver is relatively small.
    • The receiver is flexible and easy to use. Firmware updating is easy and it adds new functions.
    • The application is reliable and it has many functions.

Cons

    • If you want to connect it to a 4K TV with HDR you need to unlock this ability by pushing some button combination on the receiver itself.
    • The main interface is awful. The main categories and menus are mixed and controversial.
