The audio reproduction with the Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A1080is frankly unbelievably good. The different listening modes for music are easy to flip through. The receiver does such a good job distributing the sound that it seems clearer and generally more pleasing to the ear.

The Yamaha AV Controller app works great with Yamaha RX-V685BL and allows you to change all of the options from your phone. There are a bunch of pre-set audio profiles to choose from under the DSP tab. You can also choose from regular Dolby Surround or 7.2 Stereo. 4K support is very good, and there aren't any lipsync issues.

Connections & Setup

Yamaha RX-V685BL vs Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A1080 has both sound and picture impressive, especially movies in 4K HDR and Dolby Surround with Atmos. Atmos test videos are a good way to test for Atmos sound. Also, unlike lower-end receivers, it allows ANY source to be sent to Zone 2, including HDMI. The setup of Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A1080 versus RX-V685BL is intuitive and only takes a few minutes to get it exactly how you want.

Design

The Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A1080is built to last, in terms of both build quality and being upgradable and on the cutting edge of home theatre tech. Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A1080 vs RX-V685BL has amazing build quality, nice remote, lots of (mostly not pleasing, to me) DSP modes, decent YPAO calibration system, and less surround sound capability than similarly priced or less expensive systems. Operating these both Yamaha AVR is pretty straightforward and intuitive.

Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A1080

Pros:

  • The build quality, of both the main unit and the remote.
  • The nice remote control that has lighting on the buttons.
  • Has a two-line front display.

Cons:

  • The DSP. Sometimes it does mess up and make voices sound like they are echoing, but it usually sounds pretty good.
  • Even using external amplifiers, you cannot run a 7.2.2 system.
  • There is no ability to run rear height speakers.

Yamaha RX-V685BL

Pros:

  • Lots of DSP modes.
  • Superb build quality.

Cons:

  • While there are two output jacks for subs, they are not calibrated separately.
  • Pre-amp outputs don't include any for the height speakers.
