Features & Performance

If you compare these two devices, the Sony PS-HX500 has a belt drive and the Pioneer PLX 1000 has a direct drive. Both record players have automatic rotation speeds are available between 33 and 45 RPM. Also, both have a moving magnet (MM) cartridge type.

Vinyl record players are no longer news, but the Sony PS-HX500 is the first to be able to do it in DSD 56 format. Therefore, Sony calls this model a “Hi-Res player”. Sony versus Pioneer has a USB connection. By establishing a USB connection between the turntable and computer, the owner of the Sony PS-HX500 can digitize its entire archive.

Well, it must be said that the stability of rotation, the quality of reproduction, as well as the pleasure of working on these devices, is beyond praise. There is no beating of the supporting disc, the pitch ranges are switched instantly and clearly, the pitch itself works perfectly, the player’s body does not emit any noise and quietly swallows the vibrations coming from outside, making the work silent and not distorting the sound path.

Design & build quality

The high-quality 5 mm rubber mat ensures perfect adhesion to the surface of the plate and reduces the occurrence of excess resonance, and the highly inert aluminum cast disk creates the perfect balance between strength and weight.

As for the design, the PS-HX500 did not inherit the fashionable coloring of its Walkman relatives; in appearance, it is akin to the minimalist competitors of the same price category. The rectangular angular body of strict black color is unlikely to wake up the imagination of your inner designer.

Pioneer is very pleasant. The top panel is anodized black aluminum. The inscriptions are made qualitatively and seem indelible.

Sony PS-HX500

Pros:

  • Electronic speed selector is convenient for moving from albums to singles.
  • Parallel lines at the top simplify cartridge alignment.

Cons:

  • Recording software is incompatible with the latest version of Mac iOS.

Pioneer PLX 1000

Pros:

  • All this, coupled with large legs that have good amortization properties, gives an excellent result.
  • The power supply elements are equipped with radiators that exclude overheating.

Cons:

  • The wires of the toner are laid carelessly, and the wild play of the tonearm is in a horizontal plane. Unworthy, given the height of the bar, which Pioneer said.
