Audio-Technica AT-LP120 vs Audio-Technica AT-LP3: Manual vs Automatic Model

Audio-Technica AT-LP120 vs Audio-Technica AT-LP3

The pair Audio-Technica AT-LP120 vs Audio-Technica AT-LP3 poses a hard choice to average customers. Being produced by the same brand, these two good-working turntables are targeted at different customers. The AT-LP120 is a very powerful fully manual device stuffed with pitch control to be used mostly by the fans of turntables who know how to work with vintage-like devices. However, the AT-LP3 is a less powerful automatic model that will be convenient for those who have minor experience in working with such products.

Features & performance

After having tested Audio-Technica AT-LP120 vs AT-LP3 with an aim to compare their technical characteristics, I would like to say that both devices have a switchable built-in “PHONO” pre-amplifier, which is a good sign to get a clear and near-identical sound from the turntables. However, they use different cartridge types, as the AT-LP120 works with a dual magnet, while its rival AT-LP3 has a moving magnet. At the same time, the AT-LP120 outperforms its counterpart in the terms of the playback speed, as it offers 33.3, 45, 78 RPM versus 33.3, 45 offered by the AT-LP3.

Design & build quality

I must note that both devices are built solid using high-quality materials. Both devices of the pair Audio-Technica AT-LP3 vs Audio-Technica AT-LP120 have an aluminum diecast platter. However, the AT-LP120 is stuffed with a USB port and RCA output, which helps the device be compatible with laptops and speakers easily. At the same time, the AT-LP3 offers its users only RCA output. While both devices have similar dimensions, the AT-LP120 weighs twice heavier than the AT-LP3 (23.5 pounds against 11.9 pounds). Moreover, both devices are sold in black and go with a transparent dust cover.
