Sony XBR85X900F: Bright 85-inch UHD TV with Potent HDR and Android TV Functionality

Sony XBR85X900F

Full 4K/HDr functionality of the XBR85X900F is backed up by the high level of brightness and local dimming technology. The picture is very colorful and accurate, with premium contrast. Still, the cost of this model is quite high while it has some interface and is rather power-consuming.

This model has the largest display among the X900F TV series. The latter includes also screens from 49 to 75 inches, based on VA panel with Direct LED backlight and local dimming feature. The colors and contrasts are natural and sharp while the blacks don’t go as deep as in some of the rival TVs. There’s a wide array of smart features including smart home compatibility, voice control, and comprehensive menu with many streaming services.

Every Sony XBR85X900F review shouldn’t omit its highly accurate and diverse color mapping. The display supports the Triluminos technology producing the range of colors and gradations comparable to high-grade OLED screens. The colors are sharp yet natural with dynamic transitions and rich shades. Whites are solid and deep while grays and blacks seem a bit less dark than they should. Bright colors look spot-on, but some tend to be a bit warmer than intended.

The Sony XBR85X900F can get very bright, with 667 nits of peak brightness on full display. This enables high-quality HDR performance within HLG, HDR10, and Dolby Vision formats. The highlights pop due to smart Bit Mapping and a high level of brightness. The contours and overall contrast become sharper, and the shadow detail is fully visible.

The XBR85X900F review would be incomplete without describing its high-class motion handling. The X1 processor enables the X-motion technology, flickering the backlight, and sharpening the image in focus. High native refresh rate (120Hz with 240Hz with interpolation) enhances the sports and other dynamic content watching. Still, the input lag on this TV is quite high making over 100ms in the enhanced picture mode and about 40ms in the gaming setting.

The Sony XBR85X900F specs show three bottom and one side-mounted HDMI port with HDCP 2.3 protection, two USB 2.0, and one 3.0, a composite input, and two audio outputs (optical and analog). There’s also the Ethernet connection and two-band Wi-Fi. Bluetooth has 4.1 version and syncs with a smartphone immediately. The built-in Chromecast technology has wide functionality to navigate the menu, search the content, access the Internet, managing smart home gear, etc.

The Sony XBR85X900F manual describes a simple setup and menu navigation. Incorporated Android TV platform has a good size and location of icons. There are hundreds of streaming services available including the video and audio ones (Sling TV, HBO, Spotify, etc.).
