Due to the test SVS SB-1000 vs BIC America F12 I’ve managed to compare the peculiarities of mid-level SVS SB-1000 and low-cost BIC America F12 (extremely cheap related to its features) – two 12-inch subs for home theaters and acoustics.
SVS SB-1000 and BIC America F12 have RCA inputs for low-frequency preamp connections. However, BIC America F12 can boast more of them – its 8 RCA inputs versus SVS SB-1000’s 2 ones. SVS SB-1000 is more powerful, but BIC America F12’s power is still enough for small room. Both subs allow adjusting volume, crossover to power the front speakers, and phase, as well as making various connections within the home theatre system. That permits to make all the adjustments very accurate and fast.
SVS SB-1000 produces good power despite its small cabinet. It delivers clean low-frequencies being installed in small or medium spaces. It does its job when place it either in the corner or along the sidewall (to bring the sub out some inches is recommended). Its frequency and volume can be easily balanced using the AV’s auto calibration with the further manual tweaking. Then the sub provides a tight bass even for the advanced LFE-soundtracks. The low-frequency sound is not earth-shaking but less boomy than many other models in this price range.
BIC America F12’s built-in amp has an underpowered rating, but the sub produces clear stable volume and frequency separation for the duration of the sound. Its bass response requires solid main speakers to avoid overpowering. It doesn’t fit small ones (soundbar or bookshelf units) even at low volumes.
Both units have built-in connectors to toggle between Dolby Pro-Logic, DTS surround-sound AVRs, or Dolby Digital ones (5.1, 6.1, and 7.1-channel devices).
The test BIC America F12 vs SVS SB-1000 revealed no essential diversities in the subs’ design. Both units are very compact and can be placed even on the bookshelf if it is necessary. They are made of durable materials. BIC America F12’s cabinet looks very stylish in its black laminate and with a silver cone. It has a black mesh grille to remove if desired.
