Not so long ago I had the opportunity to compare two models of receivers. So, I decided to write this comparison to discover the main differences between these products.

Features & Performance

First, I would like to admit that Sony STR-DH790 is more powerful than its competitor because it maintains different audio formats (AAC, Apple Lossless, DSD, FLAC, MP3, WAV and so on), while Sony STRDH770 is able to produce MP3, WAV, and WMA. I do not want to waste a lot of time to find the appropriate disk. On the other hand, Sony STRDH770 consumes only 240W, while Sony STRDH790 requires 700W.

Connections & Setup

Sony STRDH790 has 7 built-in decoders, that’s why I can watch high-quality videos and enjoy the pure sound. Unfortunately, Sony STRDH770 maintains only Dolby True HD and Digital Plus. Both of these devices are able to maintain the Bluetooth signal, but you can forget about WI-FI. In addition, the developers didn’t add a special smartphone remote control function.

Design

As for the design, it is difficult to choose the winner of this battle - Sony STRDH770 vs STR-DH790. I think that Sony’s designers are real geniuses and most of their gadgets look great.

The front side is very stylish and you can find input selector, volume and several buttons, which can help you turn it on/off, add speakers, tuning modes, night mode, Bluetooth and so on. Materials are high-quality and it’s a real pleasure to touch it. As for the back side, it is like a paradise for sound lovers: dozens of different ports, which you can use to get the best user experience.

Sony STR-DH790 Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • The weight is relatively small (only 15 pounds).
  • There is a built-in sleep timer, which works according to the schedule without any problems at all.

Cons:

  • It doesn’t maintain a three-zone capability, that’s why only several people can use it simultaneously.
  • The developers didn’t add a smartphone remote control in order to make our lives easier.

Sony STRDH770 Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • The sound quality is still really great even despite the fact that it is not compatible with different audio formats.

Cons:

  • Impressive sound equals high-quality files. Unfortunately, they didn’t add the ASR technology.
  • The product is very large and it is difficult to find the appropriate place in your home.
