Features & Performance

The Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A1080 vs Denon AVR-X4400H collation shows that the first model has a much improved Alexa system that operates without repeating and re-installation. The second one doesn’t want to perform the voice operations and makes the receiver freeze from time to time. The AVR-X4400H’s sound returns through ARC and doesn’t work for inbuilt Smart TV apps like Netflix. Such a problem is absent on the RX-A1080.

Connections & Setup

The Audyssey setup on the Denon is pretty nice, but this feature doesn’t take into account real furniture placement. The sound is swallowed by the sofa and chairs. The Yamaha has better Audyssey because the sound reaches me without any hindrances. The Denon AVR-X4400H versus Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A1080 comparison is the best way to see the difference between their connectors: Denon has 8 AV inputs and Yamaha – 9; the RX-A1080 proposes me 3 optical and 3 coaxial digital inputs, while AVR-X4400H has only 2 optical and 2 coaxial.

Design

I can compare the appearance of both devices and see a difference between Volume and Input selector buttons placement. The Denon has these controllers on the top of the front panel and the Yamaha has the same set of knobs below. The RX-A1080’s screen is bigger and brighter while looking at the AVR-X4400H it is hard to see clearly all the letters. Moreover, the Yamaha’s matte and glossy black combination look more presentable than Denon’s monotony.

Denon AVR-X4400H Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • The unit can switch automatically from Dolby to DTS, etc.
  • The HEOS and AVR Remote apps work without problems and I can use them on an intuitive level.

Cons:

  • While a CEC using, the receiver turns itself on randomly.
  • The Wi-Fi/Ethernet connection disappears while using Pandora and Spotify.

Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A1080 Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • The sound is crisp and the bass is really deep.
  • I use my iPhone as a stand-alone remote and have much more functions than the standard one can propose (it has a bigger set of buttons).

Cons:

  • Dolby Atmos and DTS-X become better only after the firmware updating. I couldn’t enjoy these features before the upgrading.
  • The device overheats too much. I have to install an additional cooler.
