Fall in love with music again with Yamaha RX-V485

Yamaha RX-V485

Yamaha is the first brand, which comes to the mind when I start thinking about music electronics and instruments. So I decided to test the RX-V485, a receiver which is considered to be the example of the Japanese quality. Friendly price, amazing Yamaha RX-V485 specs, and 5.1-channel surround sound greatly affected my opinion.

The solid construction of a Yamaha RX-V485 conquered me immediately. Thanks to the frosting and glossy surfaces combining, the device has got an interesting visual effect. It became a useful decoration with a noble design. All the letters and numbers are clearly visible on the fluorescent built-in display, so there is no harm for eyes. Compact dimensions (12.4 x 17.1 x 6.3 inches) and low weight (17.86 pounds) allowed me to place the receiver in plain sight. After testing I noticed, that such a small and incredibly looking thing contains a plenty of the most popular functions and very clean sound.

The voice control compatibility Amazon Alexa drew my attention almost immediately after unpacking the product and reading the manual. It really works, but Alexa integration claims both the MusicCast extension and logging in the Yamaha official website. I also found out the ability to control the device with the help of the app. As my smartphone is always near me, it’s rather an actual feature. In addition, I had an opportunity to use one of 23 languages and customize the interface according to my needs – hide unused icons and rename functions. A tablet version of the application is also available freely. Nearly 40 preset FM stations have great sound. They work without problems and interruption into the signal. I am a real radio fan so I was especially serious about checking mentioned feature. Nothing awful was discovered and I love it! Apple AirPlay support became a bonus for me, the same as the ability to turn off automatically after a long inactivity.

I was pleasantly surprised when detected the low level of heating of the whole construction. Even after an hour of unstoppable functioning, the device was barely warm. That is an amazing peculiarity because my previous receiver performed a room-heater task, and such “additional function” wasn’t profitable personally for me. The truly wireless sound system is a great innovation but for me, the USB music playback UI is primitive and doesn’t scale well. That is the only thing, which puzzled me. By the way, even playing the hard rock on a high volume the Yamaha RX-V485 suppresses vibration and all the furniture held still. The unit performs such audio formats, as AAC, DSD, FLAC, MP3, WAV, and WMA and for me, that is enough. As I like finding and testing interesting functions, built-in clock and sleep timer were checked as quickly as possible. They did their entire task without failures, so I can’t say anything bad about it. The device displayed a high-definition font, thanks which the reading of information about the music isn’t a problem.

Sound Quality

The Yamaha RX-V485 has a wonderful room-filling sound. The Dolby digital plus, the Dolby surround, and the Dolby TrueHD allowed the sound field adjustment works well. For 1 zone the device is enough. I checked it on the “Lord of the Rings” and I was fully “swallowed” by the atmosphere through the epic and surrounded sound. For me personally, the presence of YPAO was a pleasant surprise. I heard about it earlier, but it was the first time when I saw that the feature performs analysis of the acoustics, room system and precisely adjusts various sound parameters to provide the best sound for my living space. It blew my mind in positive meaning.

I enjoy the possibility to connect 2 different sets of speakers! I connected my outdoor speakers and inside ones. It was easy and the result was as well as can be expected. I like to use Bluetooth with my TV, but I occasionally found a sound lag, especially after switching between viewing cable and streaming YouTube videos. To fix the problem I had to turn the receiver off then back. Such manipulation allowed it to adapt to the input. Actually, 4 HDMI inputs and 1 output are enough for the versatile functioning of the system. I like, that Yamaha RX-V485 doesn’t force me with Wi-Fi. I even tried to hook to the unit with component cables with turned off wireless LAN.

The set-up was easy and took a total of 20 minutes. The device was accompanied by the quick set up book and there was no detailed Yamaha RX-V485 review. I expected to see a full-fledged instruction book with the nuanced description, so I was a little bit disappointed. All the inputs and outputs were in plain view, so it was simple to perform all the operations.

If you like clean and transporting sound together with innovative technical features than Yamaha RX-V485 is a great choice. It offers surround sound system, Amazon Alexa, 40 FM stations, Apple AirPlay support, truly wireless sound system, the vibration suppression, the built-in clock, the sleep timer, the YPAO. At the same time, I got some uncritical sound lag, not very useful quick set up book and primitive USB music playback UI. Of course, I can wholeheartedly recommend Yamaha RX-V485, because that Japanese creation fully satisfied me and confirmed the status of one of the best.
