Sonos Beam vs Playbar: Solid Soundbars With Cinematic Sound

The Sonos Beam vs Playbar comparison reveals two multifunctional soundbars that provide a cinema-grade sound. The main difference between the models lies in the number of drivers. The Beam is a newer and more advanced smart soundbar but only with a few drivers. The Playbar includes 9 drivers (6 mid-woofers and 3 tweeters). Compare it to the Beam that has only 4 drivers (center tweeter and 3 passive radiators). Both models feature Class-D digital amplifiers.

Features

If we compare Sonos Playbar vs Beam in terms of voice control, the Beam will be a more beneficial model. The Playbar doesn’t have a built-in mic and can be controlled by voice only if you have a smart speaker. The Beam, in its turn, has built-in Alexa and Google Assistant. You can use these voice assistants to control playback or smart home options if you have other smart devices from Sonos.

It’s not easy to highlight the distinctions between the soundbars in the Sonos Beam vs Sonos Playbar feature comparison as these models are very similar in this regard. Both have 3 built-in channels and don’t support Dolby Atmos or DTS. The soundbars run on the Sonos platform that offers 100 streaming services, EQ adjustment, and TruePlay tuning (a software that tunes the soundbar specifically to the room’s acoustic). Not to mention that it includes such useful features as Voice Enhancement and Night Sound mode. None of the models come with Bluetooth support. However, they both use Wi-Fi for wireless connection. The Beam uses AirPlay 2 for connection to Apple devices, but can’t say the same for the Playbar.

Design

In terms of Sonos Beam vs. Playbar placement type comparison, the Playbar is suitable for wall mount while the Beam can be placed only on a horizontal surface. For a wired connection, the Playbar uses optical input while the Beam is equipped with an HDMI ARC connector. Both of them include an Ethernet port.

The Playbar is shaped like a rectangle while the Beam has rounded edges. The Playbar has play/pause and volume up/down control buttons on the right end. The Beam incorporates such onboard controls: volume down/up, microphone button, and play/pause button in the center of the front panel. The Playbar is noticeably bigger in size in comparison with the Beam (3.35 x 35.43 x 5.51 versus 2.70 x 25.625 x 3.94 inches).
